Digital Time Capsule – Privacy-First Browser Encryption Guide

A digital time capsule is a secure space to write letters, record voice messages, and attach files for your future self. This premium offline tool uses military-grade, client-side encryption to ensure that your memories remain locked, confidential, and 100% private until the day you choose to open them.

Traditional online time capsule services require you to upload personal memories, photos, and voice notes to their servers. This introduces data privacy risks and the chance that the company goes out of business before your capsule unlocks. By utilizing local IndexedDB storage and the Web Crypto API, this tool ensures your data never leaves your device, keeping your future messages completely under your control.

How to Use the Tool

  1. Select 'Create Capsule' from the main dashboard to open the multi-step editor.
  2. Enter a title and write your message using the premium rich-text editor (track word and character limits live).
  3. Add attachments: upload images, record your voice directly using the microphone, upload audio files, or attach custom files (e.g. PDFs or document scans).
  4. Set your unlock date using the quick presets (1 month to 10 years) or a precise custom calendar date and time.
  5. Toggle encryption settings: choose to add an optional password (PBKDF2 key derivation) for extra local safety. If a password is set, the capsule cannot be decrypted without it.
  6. Click 'Lock Capsule' to encrypt the payload via AES-GCM and store it inside your browser's IndexedDB. Download a calendar reminder (.ics file) to notify you on the unlock day.
